‘El Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco.’
Often referred to by many as Mexico’s ‘Sistine Chapel,’ the Santuario, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (as is SMdA) enjoys the deep affection of Mexican’s nationwide. One does not need to be of the Roman Catholic faith to enjoy a visit and to be moved by the experience. I have been to the Santuario multiple times previously.
The bus to Atotonilco leaves from ‘Calzada de la Luz,’ except this week and maybe for several weeks more – due to road construction. It took me a half-hour asking passers-by where I could catch the bus. I found the answer and boarded the bus at the intersection of Hidalgo, Calzada de la Luz and Calzada de la Aurora. Busses are marked ‘Santuario de Atotonilco,’ you pay the MX$15 fare (approx. US$0.75) upon arrival in Atotonilco. These are local busses stopping to pick up / drop off passengers that have seen better days, but they will get you to the destination and you will experience a slice of life of locals including students coming home from school. The busses travel hourly, in both directions … with the last returning bus at 5 p.m.
Once at Atotonilco (end of the line for the bus) the walk to the Santuario takes maybe 5 minutes. Proper attire is required inside: no shorts or revealing clothing. Hats must not be worn. You can take photos with a camera or cellphone, but no flash. No food or drink. No loud talking.
I sat to reflect, some quiet time and then took photos. Two hours later I boarded the bus back to SMdA.

‘El Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco’。
