点评:Wednesday 30th April while walking down the High Street in Staines on Thames, it was along here the we stopped to look at this Statue.
It is near Tilly's Lane sandwiched between WH Smith/Post Office on one side of the street and the Harvester restaurant on the other
It depicts two men carrying a roll of linoleum which was once a major factory and largest employer in the Town. The statue is in homage to the town's historical links with lino.
On both ends of the roll of linoleum there is a pattern etched into the metal. There are words etched into the central part of the roll, an extract is: - "Roll out the lino from Staines to the world. Release every pattern from cheeseboard to twirl. In every hopeful kitchen let life unfurl bathrooms are artrooms."
In front of the statue there is a metal plaque which is inscribed with the following words :-
"The Staines Linoleum Factory operated where the Two Rivers Shopping Centre now stands. Fredrick Walton, the inventor of linoleum, opened the factory in 1864. By 1930 it covered 45 acres. It produced the first lino in the world and was was the largest employer in the area for many years."
The factory finally closed its doors in 1970 and the buildings were demolished for redevelopment in 2000.
