Donald Campbell's Grave的点评
点评：Visiting the grave of this brave bold ambitious & charismatic adventurer was just one of the many things i needed to do in my life & it can be located in the cemetery behind the Crown Inn & directions to the grave are given on a blue plaque attached to the entrance gate. We as a family had a brief encounter with Donald in 1966 when i was probably 9 years old. He stayed for tea & cake as i recall & my mother thought he was a 'charming gentleman'!. Because of this we had a natural interest in Donalds projects, most notably Bluebird K7 & watched in horror on our black & white television in early 1967 as the World Water Speed Record attempt failed in such tragic circumstances.
More recently, my interest in Donald & Bluebird was re ignited with the raising of Bluebird from the depths of Coniston Water in 2021, i have my own opinions on that one but it has at least given Donald the proper burial he so richly deserved.
Whilst in Coniston i also visited the Ruskin Museum a short walk from the cemetery.
this smallish museum has an attached wing dedicated to both Donald & Malcolm Campbell & also now houses, & rightly so, the renovated & rebuilt Bluebird K7. The museum also has a large & fascinating collection of related artefacts that is very well worth a look.
I finished my day in Coniston with a 90 minute 'Campbells on Coniston' Boat trip operated by the Coniston Launch Company adjacent to the Bluebird cafe on the lake itself (12 minute walk from the Crown Inn) & was a fact filled & memorable journey which left me with more questions than answers. Will possibly need to visit again in the not too distant future.
