点评:I remember riding across the bridge as a small child. I believe the toll was a dime each way in the early 1960s. The narrow lanes were scary at all times of the day and especially at night with that bend in the middle. The political fight that Madison, Illinois put up in the 1960s to stop the I-270 Bridge (which was and still is free) and keep their toll bridge as the only crossing between downtown St. Louis and Alton, IL was fierce.
The Missouri side entrance has been upgraded as part of the larger "I-270 Bridge Replacement" project just upstream from the Chain of Rocks Bridge. The Missouri side now has a sheltered picnic area with grills, paved parking, and "outhouse" style toilet facilities. The site is also gated and has staff on hand during operating hours for security.
The bridge itself is a walk into the past. Much of the concrete decking appears to be original and every few feet there are "Bell System" manholes where telephone lines were run. The views on the river were tremendous, one can even see the Gateway Arch several miles downstream from the bridge.
The Illinois side entrance is a little more "primitive" than Missouri, just a couple of information boards on the bridge and US 66. Hopefully once the new I-270 Bridge is completed, Illinois will make upgrades to their side of the old bridge entrance.
Best advice on walking the bridge, take your time and wear the most comfortable shoes you own. Remember it's a mile to cross the bridge and a mile to get back to your car.
