点评:Pre-European contact Native American history is roughly divided into five eras: Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian, and Historic. It is the penultimate of these that begins the story of the Hardman Farm State Historic site, when the Nacoochee Mound was gradually constructed one bucket of dirt at a time. Native American paths were then used as a basis for constructing the Unicoi Turnpike, which stitched together the newly arrived European communities in the area. Daniel Brown bought 1,200 acres around the current area in the land lottery of the early 1800’s and Captain James Nichols built the West End mansion in 1870. The home was purchased by Calvin Hunnicutt in 1893 and then again in short order by Governor Lamartine Hardman in 1903. The Hardman family ran a dairy operation on site in the early 1900’s and donated the premises to the state in 1999. It was refurbished over the next decade and has been open to the public since 2014.
I visited the property twice on a Saturday in December. The first visit was a solo, self-guided affair in the early afternoon. After checking in at the visitor center, I was given a site map of the eighteen buildings on the property. Over a couple hours I visited them in numerical order, starting at the Dairy Manager’s House, continuing down Unicoi Turnpike, and incorporating notable structures such as the Game House, Dairy Barn, and Crescent Hill Baptist Church. Static storyboards are scattered throughout. I returned three hours later to experience the Victorian Christmas celebration. This included hot chocolate, s’mores over a campfire, horse rides around the perimeter, and an opportunity (of course) to get your picture taken with Santa. It also included access to the West End Mansion, where fifteen (!) character actors were spread out in the two floors of the mansion and kitchen. Dressed in period clothes, they “discussed” a wide variety of topics germane to the late 1800’s, including clothing, the inner workings of the farm, and the party itself. Fresh cookies were available from kitchen before departing outside to visit Santa. Between the two visits I spent probably four hours onsite.
First-things-first: the Victorian Christmas was an absolute delight. It was well organized, had a wide variety of interactive opportunities, and was reasonably priced at $25. I’ve been to a few similar events at the Minnesota Historical Society over the years involving period actors so I can say with some insight that the folks in the mansion did a fantastic job. They were knowledgeable, funny, engaging, and very well dressed. The solo-visit earlier in the day dovetailed nicely with the nighttime activities as I was already familiar with the buildings and could reference them in my conversations with the actors. Overall, this was my fourteenth of nineteen Georgia State Parks Historical Sites and solidly the best experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested and would like to thank the people who put the event together for a wonderful holiday memory. Happy New Year!
