A WWI Western Front Battlefields Pilgrimage
Pozieres Memorial的点评
点评：The Memorial and British Cemetery at Pozieres was one of the many cemeteries and sites we visited as part of a 4 day pilgrimage, following the WWI Western Front Battlefields trail.
All of these places have a sense of the scared about them. There is a hushed, sombre atmosphere. Some people are purposeful, striding straight to a family member’s grave, while others wander through, quietly paying their respects to those who lie buried in named and unnamed graves. Their sacrifices are almost unimaginable. It’s humbling and very moving but it’s also chilling. The stark rows of white gravestones and the sheer number of wasted lives are hard to get your head around and hard to deal with.
2,760 British and Commonwealth soldiers are buried here. Half of them are unnamed.
The information board is worth seeking out and provides a good history of the WWI battles around Pozières and along the Somme.
GETTING HERE:
The cemetery is very easy to get to because it sits right on the main D29 road from Albert. You cannot miss the imposing facade - a typical Lutyens design with a formal archway, flanked by long rows of columns. There is no dedicated carpark. We just pulled up on the roadside.
PLANNING A WWI WESTERN FRONT DRIVING ITINERARY:
For those on a WWI pilgrimage, you can easily combine Pozieres Cemetery with visits to the Lochnagar Crater, the Windmill site, the British Tank Memorial and the Animal war Memorial, which are all within 5 minutes drive. Mouquet Farm, the Thiepval Woods, Ulster Tour and the Thiepval Cemetery are also less than 10 minutes away. There is a lot to see in this small area.
