Classic Wings的点评
点评：I had wanted to have a flight in a Tiger Moth for ages and the de Havilland double seemed like a great way to do this as you can fly two aircraft for a discount over how much they would cost individually. Biplanes are very sensitive to cross winds and so the weather can easily cause flights to be called off. You should take this into account when you book. Fortunately the day of my flight proved to have a nice enough forecast with only a small amount of wind.
I arrived at 10am for my flight at 10:30 although it was delayed to nearly 11am due to some early morning fog. This isn't a problem as you're at Duxford with hours of things to do. There's also a safety briefing including a video to do before your flight as well as making sure the supplied jacket and flying cap fit. The cap includes the headphones to enable you to hear your pilot.
11am came around very quickly and I was helped into the Tiger Moth which was piloted by Amanda. She's a very experienced Tiger Moth pilot who flew one around the world a few years ago so I was in very experienced hands. We flew west for a few miles with Amanda explaining everything. I then got the chance to take the controls. I had flown before and Amanda realised this "You've done this before" She said. It's clear when your up there why these aircraft are so affected by the weather as even on this relatively calm day, the wind was pushing the aircraft around and it required constant adjustments to keep it straight. It was a lot of fun though and Amanda even waved her hands to prove to the onboard video that was recording that she wasn't flying. I flew part of the way back and then Amanda took over for a very smooth landing. It was then back to the Classic Wings Hut to return the borrowed gear and view the video. The video and photos are a bit pricey but you get the video on a nice USB sd card holder complete with the SD card that recorded the video so it's better than some when you just get the ID card. The video is of excellent quality and you can clearly hear all of the radio communications. It's probably just me but I'd prefer a video with less of me and more of the view or perhaps a second forward facing camera but it's an excellent record of the flight.
There was then a bit of a gap before my second flight of the day in the afternoon. I went off to have lunch and had Duxford's excellent fish and chips. I had a bit of a wander around some of the museum (I've been many times but I never get bored) before returning for the Dragon Rapide.
There was a further safety briefing before we boarded. This flight is with many other Classic Wings customers as it's a small airliner. There's no opportunity to fly as it has a tiny cockpit with one set of controls. It's excellent for sight seeing though and I got some nice shots of Duxford plus the surrounding area.
Overall the day exceeded my expectations and I will be looking to return for another flight with Classic Wings in the future. Possibly the Piper SuperCub as my budget sadly doesn't stretch to their Spitfire!
If you're reading this to decide whether to take a flight with classic wings, I would say go for it. I can't fault it and as someone with a bit of a weak stomach when it comes to things in motion, I had no issues in either aircraft. Classic Wings communications were always excellent and their staff were friendly and welcoming on the day. Take into account that your flight may be delayed due to weather. This is for very good reasons and is entirely for your own safety. But definitely go for it!
