Make something amazing and learn a new skill - Blacksmith Experience

点评：I had never thought of becoming a blacksmith, but I love trying new things... and this was certainly something new!
The forge only runs on Wednesdays, and so I was fortunate that they had a space on the one week that I was in the area.
The safety briefing was excellent (you don't mess around with 1,200 degrees of furnace) and they provided the necessary leather gloves, apron and safety glasses. Supervision was 1:1 and, despite warnings about sparks, the old clothes I was wearing did not get damaged.
So, what's it like? In one sense it was easier than I had thought. They've taught six year olds how to hammer a red-hot steel rod. You just bash it and some of the hammers are quite lightweight. Easy. We all made several pieces that impressed our friends.
In another sense, it's a test of ingenuity to know how to place it on the anvil and where to hit it to get the metal to bend in the right way. There's so much skill involved. Much harder than I'd realised.
Thankfully, all the blacksmiths were keen to share their knowledge and everyone had a great time bashing away to create amazing items. A standard piece is a poker with a double twist in the middle and a scroll handle, but you can pretty much make anything you want to and they've got loads of inspiration in their gift shop.
As an added bonus, tea and coffee are included and lunch can be ordered from the cafe, also run by volunteers.
If you haven't got time to do a full day (10am-3pm) then they also offer a shorter 'have a go' experience. But i can guarantee you'll want to come back and spend another day bashing stuff.
