An awe-inspiring experience, and great visitor centre.
Calanais Standing Stones & Visitor Centre的点评
点评：This is my first visit to the new visitor centre, and it came only a few days after it first opened. As a local resident of the Outer Hebrides, I had free admission. I arrived by service bus from Stornoway, a journey of 30 minutes. The walking route to the visitor centre is uphill, through the car parking area, upon which a staircase takes you to the reception area. A member of staff will direct you to the till, if you need to buy a ticket. This area also gives access to the restaurant and the souvenir shop. Beyond that lies an exhibition space, including a small cinema. On the day of my visit, this was not working, but I am confident this issue will have been addressed. The exhibition space includes a separate video presentation by local residents who tell you what the Stones mean to them. The restaurant is subject to a separate review. I think the building will grow on me as I return; a noteworthy oddity is the inclusion of the gable of the Callanish Farmhouse into the restaurant, which is all that is left of that building. I'd give the inside part of the experience an hour, perhaps more to take time in the restaurant. Staff are friendly and helpful.
The Calanais Stones themselves stand at the top of an uphill walk, which some may find a tad steep. That part of the experience has not changed, apart from a few interpretation boards. Standing in an elevated position, you are greeted by a commanding view of surrounding area, villages and the waters of Loch Roag that surround Calanais, which augment the awe-inspiring aspect of the Stones. It should be pointed out that access to the Stones from the village end has been locked, although I believe that the villagers have the code for the electronic locks.
The numbers of people visiting at any one time varies greatly, although that does not detract from the experience, in my view.
Calanais Stones & Visitor Centre is fine for all ages, although those with mobility issues may find the actual area of the stones a little difficult to negotiate.
