Reina was the best. Her knowledge of marine life made this experience unforgettable. She had an amazing eye and could spot things I never would have seen on my own. Then she’d shine her light so I knew exactly where to look. She shared so much about what we were seeing.
We leisurely snorkeled out into Hull Bay at dusk under the moon, past the anchored boats and all the moorings. We saw a turtle, a squirrelfish, and even played with feather duster worms. I couldn’t believe I was just bobbing way out there in the warm Caribbean water, looking back at the lights of St. Thomas.
Reina explained how the daytime reef fish were settling in for the night while the nighttime creatures were coming out. Sea urchins were out moving around, tracking us with their pointy spines. Octopuses and eels were out of their hidey-holes, and we even saw a dozen lobsters. It was so different from snorkeling during the day.
My favorite part was the little squid. I slowly swam after one, and when I got close, he stopped, turned around, threw his tiny little arms up at me like, “RAWR!”, puffed out a little cloud of ink, and scooted away. We felt kind of bad for chasing him. He was so little…and so brave.
As we were heading back, millions of tiny fish suddenly came alive all around us, bumping into our masks. Colors were everywhere! Reina reminded me, “Keep your mouth shut when you take out your snorkel!” Then she noticed a shimmer and quietly said, “I think there’s a tarpon.” Sure enough, there it was. It flashed like polished silver for just a moment before disappearing into the darkness again.
This wasn’t just a snorkel trip. It felt like being invited into another world. I’ll never forget floating under the moon, looking back at the lights of St. Thomas while the ocean came alive around us. It was one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had
