点评:Saturday 27th May and we visited this historic market in Dakar. It was an additional and unexpected stop on our Art and Culture Tour of the City.
This historic round building was built in 1860 with brick, wood and wrought iron. In 1978 it was listed as an UNESCO Heritage Site.
Sadly in 1993 the original building was destroyed by fire. It took three years to rebuild it identically and with the same style materials.
This is a food market with all sorts of tinned, bottled and fresh foods on display. At the heart of the market are the fish and seafood stalls, it certainly was a bit smelly walking around here, strong stomach required.
Above the entrance to the Market, in wrought iron work, there is a clock, no longer working. In the past it would chime at midday to signal the closure of the Market.
Photography is permitted in the Market but the stall holders don't like having their photo taken.
The streets around the building are lined with food stalls for locals, shops and stalls selling a variety tourist gifts, including clothing, wood carvings, jewellery. The sellers did get a bit over zealous at times.
