点评:... that's the big question. Perhaps we'll never know the answers. But this guided tour of a quite remarkable artefact will some considerable way to offering a few sound suggestions. I have lived here for over a decade (emigrating from Dudley) and so have become familiar with the 'surface view' of these relics. But the structured archaeologic excavation work going on here has really opened my eyes to what must have been a sizeable site of considerable historical significance, perhaps even to the early development of an identifiable 'English' culture. Fascinating enough as it was per se, our visit was enhanced considerable by our guide (whose name escapes me but he was Dudley lad himself so at least we had no language barrier!) who really knew his onions. Fact after fact, conjecture, speculation, interpretation and yet more facts languidly rolled off his tongue with the familiarity of someone who might have watched it being built first time around. If this sort of thing don't stir your soul then surely you have no soul to stir. An exceptional morning's erudition - and all free! - but do please donate a bit in the collection bucket; these folk deserve it and more.
