点评：This was my late mom’s favourite book store in good old Madras ! Higginbothams Private Limited on Anna Salai (Mount Road) is one of Chennai’s most famous landmarks and is widely regarded as India’s oldest surviving bookstore. It was founded in 1844 by Abel Joshua Higginbotham during the British colonial era.
The main store is known for its colonial-era architecture, wooden interiors, spiral staircase, stained glass windows, and enormous collection of books ranging from literature and history to Tamil books, children’s books, stationery, and competitive exam material.
The bookstore remains a beloved place for Chennai readers, and many people still visit it for the experience of browsing physical books in a historic setting. Recent discussions online describe it as a “happy place” and “unmatched” among Indian bookstores. As Anthony Trollope rightly remarked and I quote : “This habit of reading, I make bold to tell you, is your pass to the greatest, the purest, and the most perfect pleasure that God has prepared for His creatures. It lasts when all other pleasures fade. It will support you when all other recreations are gone. It will last until your death. It will make your hours pleasant to you as long as you live.” ( Anthony Trollope )
