Old Fort of Fort William的点评
点评：Just across the road from the Railway station and Morrisons supermarket is the remains of the old fort that gave Fort William its name. It only gets a brief mention on he web and is ignored in the tourist literature that concentrates on shopping (tartan and cashmere or Outdoor gear) or the many outdoor pursuits the area is famous for.
You have to know it is there as from the road the main thing visible is a large grassy area with picnic tables and information boards. You do get a brief glimpse of the stone walls from the road, but it really is. case of ‘Blink and you’ll miss it’! You need to explore on foot.
When the railway arrived, it cut through the centre of the fort and gradually all the buildings were demolished and used for building stone. The governor’s House survived until 1948. The panelling and banisters were then removed to the West Highland Museum on Main Street.
The splendid arched gateway was also removed and has been reconstructed to form the entrance to the nearby Craig’s Cemetery on Belford Road. This is just a short walk from the fort and is worth the effort.
There may not be much left but it was the start of Fort William and an integral part of its history. Don't ignore the old fort and do make an effort to visit.
