点评：My parents took a picture of this famous square in 1953. That picture inspired us to find this famous street and take our own picture in 2023. The half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets and the diverging two roads make this famous area iconic. In 1940 Walt Disney helped a bit by portraying this area in the movie “Pinocchio.” It was also portrayed in a later (1968) United Artist movie “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.”
Finding this “Small Square” by yourself will be a challenge—particularly during summer time. Either real early and late at night if you want a “clean” picture. Most people opt with people in the background.
The word “Plonlein” can be interpreted in two ways: it means “Small Square,” or a carpenter’s plumb line. Either explanation, this narrow street has become an iconic Medieval image of Rothenburg over the years.
We also recommend walking around Rothenburg’s Medieval Walls. Like visiting Plonlein, walking the wall is free. The walk around is over a mile long. We also enjoyed viewing the alter wood carvings (a fee) at the Church of St. James. Close by is a Reichskuchenme, a good place for lunch.
Seeing all the Christmas ornaments in June at Kathe Wohlfahrt’s brought Christmas to us mid-summer. The Night Watchmen walk is well worth it and not cheesy either. And, if you have not booked your hotel, we highly recommend Hotel Burg. It is the place where “James Bond” stayed.
