点评:The Rutland County Museum is a superb resource and well worth a visit.
I found myself in Oakham with a spare hour and decided to visit. There is a video presentation on Rutland Water (it was originally called Empingham Reservoir) and the controversy surrounding its construction. Today, at first glance, it looks like a large natural lake. Back in the middle of the last century however, the area was farmland, a valley with a river flowing through. As the population of England increased - and was forecast to increase substantially more - the requirement for more water was realised and plans were made to increase reserves. The presentation is fascinating and a trip to Rutland Water (just a few miles away) afterwards will be enriched as a result.
There are many other exhibits and a single visit will be insufficient to appreciate all that the museum has to offer. My eyes were drawn to the gallows (see photo) and the accompanying text. Moving. Thought provoking.
There is parking right outside (cost involved, FREE for disabled badge holders) with dedicated spaces for museum visitors. FREE parking may be found (time restrictions) on neighbouring streets. Entry is FREE (donations gladly accepted) and there is a shop. It's not far from the centre of town and so easily accessible by public transport.
All staff were really helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.
