点评:While chasing ancestors in England, we were drawn to St. Mary de Castro Church on the castle grounds in Leicester (an easy day trip from London by train) where several of our 16th ancestors are buried in the chancel of the church. The Grade 1 Listed church’s first foundation dates to the early 900’s, and parts of the church reflecting additions or restorations by Normans , Plantagenets, etc. through the ages abound throughout. Incredibly good luck found us visiting on a day when a church warden was present, and he graciously told us the history of the church and of our ancestors.
If you visit St Mary de Castro, please be generous at the donation box, as these ancient structures are immensely expensive to maintain. It is an incredibly beautiful and historic church, and is complimented by being a five- minute walk from Leicester Cathedral where the recently discovered remains of King Richard III are now entombed and from the Richard III Visitors Centre where his remains where initially discovered. Together they make for a fascinating day in Leicester.
