Beslan Memorial的点评
点评：Every single citizen of this country knows about that slaughter. Elder people, like me, remember watching it live. Almost twenty years have passed since then, but I still can't get rid of images of those half-naked, thirsty teenagers fleeing a perforated school with bullets whizzing among them.
I visited that poignant memorial in mid-August on my way from Vladikavkaz to Nal'chik.
Construction works were virtually accomplished; paving slabs were in place, wheel loaders were bulldozing freshly delivered fertile chernozem soil, and yardmen were applying finishing touches to the territory. A brand-new Temple of Massacred Beslan Innocents glittered in the sun (but was still closed).
I went further into that terrifying sports hall. Heartbreaking. Endless row of photos of victims, both schoolchildren and their teachers. ALL the kids who died there were either Armenian or Ossetian, i.e., highlanders, as the terrorists. ALL the special forces operatives who tried to free—and freed!—them had Russian surnames. Whom did those assassins want to punish? Us Russians? C'mon, they primarily murdered their ethnic brothers, of all the nerve! This is what people mean when they say terrorists have no nationality.
A must! Be ready for very strong emotions, however.
