点评:Birrarung Marr is a lovely city park, alongside the Yarra River. Starting at Federation Square, it’s a very easy walk down a flight of stairs to the river and along the water.
The name comes from the Wurundjeri people who originally inhabited the area. The indigenous word ‘birrarung’, means ‘river of mists’ and ‘marr’ meaning ‘side’.
The park features several artworks and sculptures including the dramatic 10 metre tall ‘Angel’ by Deborah Halden. This is no angelic figure though. It’s a strange, colourful, three-legged creature, with two heads on long extended necks. It looks more like a dinosaur mutation. Made with 4000+ hand painted mosaic tiles, its an imposing but fun figure.
One afternoon, a musical event was being held in the open, grassy area, attracting quite a crowd but we didn’t stop.
Another work Birrarung Wilam (or ‘river camp’) is a collection of indigenous artwork and sculpture. Carved, hardwood message sticks, ancestor stones, a group of 5 shields, and an eel path, together represent a puulwuurn, a traditional mound campsite. Each is highly symbolic. The five shields represent the five clans of the Kulin Nation and the eel path is a reminder that the river was once a rich source of food for the indigenous people who lived here, catching fish and trapping eels in the shallow waters.
A little further on is Melbourne Park which hosts the Australian Open. Here, in Garden Square, we saw the Australian Tennis Hall of Tennis, an outdoor exhibition of bronze busts of modern and early day tennis stars, including Evonne Goolagong, Pat Cash, Rod Laver, Margaret Court, Ken Rosewall and Frank Sedgman.
Had we walked further, we would have come to the Federation Bells, a set of 39 bronze bells, created in 2001 to celebrate the centenary of Australia’s federation.
