点评:Countless times I have passed the sign for this on the Princes Highway and never found time to pull in to see it. In recent times my brother was telling me that he had visited and it was fascinating.
Relocating back to the area, I made time to duck out to visit the museum. Follow the signs off the highway towards the local airport. Roads in and out are very good, you will need to go down a laneway past the swimming pool, but there is heaps of carparking available at the site.
I was not sure what I was expecting but suffice to say, it wasn't this. The cost was $4 for me to visit as a full paying adult- which means you can afford to visit regularly AND more importantly it's priced to allow families to enjoy it. They take cash or card to pay entry fees. Another thing to note is they have a small fridge there with a few cans of drink that they also sell. Toilets are also available at the museum.
The displays are incredibly good and tie in to the local area so beautifully. The displays are thoughtfully laid out with loads of information to read. There is also a video to watch and - that's the only downfall, no seating near the video so you can sit and watch it. (To note- they said I could move a seat from near the door if I wished to)
The volunteers here are passionate and exceptionally informed. The President , Mal (I do hope I got his name right) even made his way over to meet me. He was utterly charming with an interesting background- this man has intimate knowledge of the nuclear tests at Maralinga. Mal is turning 90 next year - and he has experienced so much in life so it's worth taking time to talk to him- he is like a living exhibit.
Another gentleman who was really informative was Rick. Rick is a bit of a history buff and he managed to locate information for me on the cemetery at Hazelwood that I recently visited. I took the information he gave me home to my mother who was so touched that he had done this. But Rick... he has some really interesting experiences - so if he is there, make time to chat to him as well.
The exhibits are many... including aircraft at the entrance to the museum. I spent a few hours here and I feel that I could return again to learn more. There are extensive exhibits, oodles of information ... and apparently there is a library upstairs that I didn't even make it to.
