点评:This is one of the two main attractions in Hill City. We arrived early for our reservation on the 1880 Scenic Railway, so we spent the time here. Our ticket for the train got us a discount on the entry fee.
The museum traces the development of Rail Roads and the impact they had on our country. There is lots of really good information, not just about the development of railroads in South Dakota, but across the entire nation.
The museum had cases and cases displaying memorabilia and old publications. We spent about 40 minutes there, but a real train buff could spend days reading all the information in the displays.
Railroads had a huge impact on the growth of our country. Yes, they moved people and freight, but their impact was even greater. Because of the railroads, the US adopted the four times zones we have in the lower forty eight states.
The museum has recreated a Telegraph Office. And signage explains how the railroads and Western Union grew together and depended on each other.
Other displays explain how railroads moved the mail. US Postal Workers actually road in mail cars and sorted mail along the route.
There is a Caboose that is open for inspection.
There are model trains in several sizes, and some are working.
We wished we had been able to spend more time there.
