The Closest You Can Get to the Geothermal Activity

点评：One of the main reasons you come to Lassen is to see the geothermal activity and there are plenty of places to do so here. For me, I think the overall experience is better hiking and seeing Bumpass Hell or Devil' Kitchen. However, if you don't like long hikes, this is an easy access attraction in the park that is very accessible. The NPS has recently improved the parking area, sidewalks and crosswalks making this attraction incredibly easy to visit. Additionally, this is the closest you can get to a boiling mud pot to see, hear and smell it. If you experience this attraction, you will strongly get all three. The big detraction is the proximity to the main park road.
We visited the site late on our first day after climbing Lassen Peak and already hiking to Bumpass Hell. Despite it being Labor Day, at 5:50 PM there were several parking spaces available. Half our car walked to see the mud pots while the other half was content with what we saw at Bumpass Hell to stay in the car as the parking lot was shaded. Here you get so close you can see the steam and the bubbles as well as hear it. However, the main attraction is the strong rotten egg smell that can overpower you as you are so close. My wife's friend and I got some great pictures of the steam and bubbles. You can walk across the street for a great view of the geothermic valley. However, most of the action is on the upper side of the street.
For me it worth the stop as you can get closer here than anywhere else in the park. With that said, it is more of drive-up attraction that lacks the action and accomplishment of other hikes. The sound, sight and smell will totally leave an impression long after you leave the park.
