点评:The Karatsu Shrine is the ultimate destination for the procession of colourful traditional floats (Hikayama) during the ‘Karatsu Kunchi’; the annual festival held each November to give thanks for the harvest. Between festivals the ‘Hikayama’ are normally displayed in an exhibition hall near to the shrine, but this has been temporarily relocated to a hall adjacent to the Karatsu JR Station. Although the shrine was not high on my list of places to see in Karatsu, it made an interesting deviation whilst walking to the nearby ‘Former Takatori Residence’.
The ancient shrine, (founded in 755AD), has a white-painted outer torii gate with two further torii gates leading to the main shrine. Further smaller shrines lie to the left and right of this main driveway, and beside the main shrine itself is an area with pictorial signboards depicting each of the 14No. Hikayama that participate in the Karatsu Kunchi.
