Statue of Kazutoyo Yamauchi的点评
点评：Wednesday 7th May we were on an organised sightseeing Tour of Kochi, which included a visit to Kochi Castle.
This large statue is located in front of the Prefectural Library just after entering the Castle's Otemon Gate. We crossed an old wooden footbridge over the Kenzan Moat to get up close to the statue.
The staute is in tribute to Yamauchi Kazutoyo a renowned character in Japanese history.
He was born in Owari (now Aichi Prefecture) in 1545 and died on the 20th September 1605 in his sixty-first year.
During his life he served as a military man and rose from the lowest rank of a Retainer, a vassel to a Feudal Lord, to being the first Lord of the Tosa Domain, now Kochi. During this period he also built Kochi Castle.
His rise in the ranks was greatly assisted by his wife Chiyo, who used their wedding money to buy him a good horse, which was expensive in those days due to demand.
Back in medieval times in Japan, wars were a regular occurance, a good horse was needed to improve survival rates in battle and the advancement of a Samurai up the ranks.
Also, she secretly passed information to him, which helped him be victorious in battle.
On our approach to the Castle we did visit a statue dedicated to Chiyo, it depicts her standing alongside a horse.
This large bronze statue has Yamauchi Kazutoyo mounted on his horse and wearing his Samurai uniform. He is also holding lance under his right arm.
The statue stands on top of a tall two tiered stone plinth which has small ditch around it and surrounded by a low level stone wall.
In front of the plinth there is an information board which provides information about the live of Yamauchi Kazutoyo.
