The fort guarding the port - Rhodes - Jul 2024

点评：As we were strolling in the evening - near the Mandraki harbor of Rhodes Town - at the end of the pier that is today the marina of Rhodes , there it stands the Agiou Nikolau ( St. Nicholas) fort.
Built in the 15th century by the knights of St. John , to give more protection to the 2 harbors of Rhodes ( the commercial and the military harbor that were functioning in close vicinity) this fort is still guarding the entrance to Mandraki harbor even today.
Nowadays it is one of the attractions of the harbor and the end of the row of Windmills - the fort that has as a light house installed on top of it - memento of the turbulent medieval times , when thickness of walls and the ability of withstanding cannon fire were its hallmarks.
Now you cannot enter to see the fort from the inside -pity , I guess it would be interesting also - so you can walk beside it and admire the craftsmanship of the military architects who built it to stand the test of siege and time for almost 500 years.
So when you are walking on the piers of Mandraki harbor , you can walk up to the fortress and take some pictures...
