点评:Sam Fiszman Park is one of the first scenic stops on the Bondi-Manly walking trail. However don’t expect any park-like facilities. There is no playground, no toilets, seating areas, or even much grass. This is a lookout point only, not a park. That said, it’s a stunning viewing point.
From this elevated position, we looked directly across to Bondi Beach and could see right down the south coast to the cliffs of Clovelly and Maroubra. Immediately below us, were dramatic sandstone rock formations and foaming waves crashing onto the rock shelf. Beyond that, we looked out across the brilliant blue colours of the sea which extended to the horizon.
Aside from the view, the park has just one, singular feature - an small, round, raised area of grass, surrounded by a low concrete wall, with the quotation, “I am better than no man, and no man is better than I am.” There was no explanation, although we guessed it was quoting Sam Fiszman. The name was unfamiliar to us but later we learnt that he was a holocaust survivor, who’d escaped to Australia and settled in Bondi, becoming a successful, local businessman. He ended up serving on a number of government advisory bodies for which he was awarded both an OAM (Order of Australia).
It is worth noting that there are two other equally stunning lookout points just below and above Sam Fiszman Park. Immediately below, is Ray O’Keefe Reserve, which has a small, free carpark (good luck getting a spot here) and stairs leading down to the North Bondi rock platform. Just above, is the Ben Buckler Lookout.
GETTING THERE: Parking around these lookout points is incredibly tight. You will be very lucky to get a spot and even if you do, they are all limited to 2 hours. The best way to access any of these lookout points is by walking. We took the easy route which was to walk to the end of Ramsgate Avenue, past the RSL club and Biddigal Reserve. However if you are happy to scramble over the rocky shelf at the far northern end of the beach, then you’ll find a set of stairs that lead up to the lookouts.
