点评:My wife and I enjoyed a successful national Conference for one of my organisations in Perth, Western Australia in May 2024. After the Conference we travelled on the Prospector Train to the goldfields town of Kalgoorlie, 600 kilometres east of Perth for a three night stay. We stayed at the Quality Inn Railway, conveniently located across the road from the railway station.
Prior to departing Brisbane for Perth we had pre booked a 2.5 hour Super Pit Tour whilst in Kalgoorlie. Unfortunately, our tour and future tours until further notice were cancelled due to maintenance which was a real pity as we were keen to take part in this unique experience.
As a consolation we were able to visit the Super Pit Lookout as part of Kalgoorlie’s famous City Tram Taster Tour taking in six attractions in the area including this Lookout.
Travel on the Tram Taster Tour is by a heritage style road tram. The tram had to park in the extensive Lookout car park and there was a short walk from where we parked to get to the Lookout proper. On the way we experienced the harshness of trying to get plants to grow here, what with all the minerals about, when we observed three small trees growing in huge black truck tyres topped in a suitable growing medium. That was quite a sight.
From the Lookout we could see first hand the huge extent of this gold mine and the deep pit created in the pursuit of finding the precious gold. We could gaze into one of the largest open-cut mines on earth and the biggest gold mine in Australia. An information poster at the Lookout states that the Pit produces around 500,000 ounces of gold each year (around 14,000 kilograms. It further states that for every 1 million tonnes of ore extracted there are between 250 to 500 kilograms of gold produced. In terms of sheer size the hole from the Pit stretches 3.7 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and around 600 metres deep. There were lots of roads constructed all around the Pit to enable the many trucks to zig zag across the mine. From the lookout the trucks looked like “matchbox toys” – that really put the sheer size of the Pit into true perspective.
The lookout has a covered viewing platform containing loads of information posters that tell the full story about gold production in this area. Some of the subjects listed on the posters included information about the equipment and vehicles used on the operation; environmental considerations and the mine’s eventual closure plans (at this stage 2035) and a very informative history of the Golden Mile to name just a few. Visitor safety is paramount here with the covered viewing platform well enclosed with a very robust iron safety fence for viewing.
The poster depicting the history of the Golden Mile had fascinating information. We learnt that following the discovery of gold by Paddy Hannan, Thomas Flanagan and Dan Shea in 1893 in the area known as the Golden Mile there was a gold rush that followed. By 1903 there were 49 operating mines, 100m headframes and more than 3,000 kilometres of underground workings on the Golden Mile. Over time all these operating mines were amalgamated to form the Big Pit, now known as the Super Pit under the direction of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd (KCGM).
You will sure to be educated about all things gold after a visit to the impressive Super Pit Lookout and so, if you can’t make a Super Pit tour then at least aim to visit this impressive lookout. You will not be disappointed. Indeed the whole gold story in this part of Western Australia is quite fascinating.
