Outstanding tour of Nueva Venecia

点评：We booked a tour from
Cartagena to Nueva Venecia and then onto Santa Marta. It was an incredible tour- we saw and learned so much. We got picked up early from our hotel in Cartagena. it’s about a 3hr drive to where you get the boat. The drive is fantastic- you get to see the countryside and go through small towns. The drive itself was worth the trip as was the conversation with our guide Juan, who is completely bilingual (Spanish, English ) We talked about Colombian life and culture and well as life overall!
We arrived at a small town where we boarded a boat- and the real adventure began. It’s about an hour by boat to the first of the towns built on stilts Buenavista. The boat captain explained facts about life on the water and pointed out notable things - explaining the activities of the fishermen we saw, about the mangroves, and the birds and ducks. Juan translated for us because our Spanish is conversational at best. We then went onto Nueva Venecia. We were able to get out of the boat at the first town but the captain was concerned about an incoming storm so we didn’t get out in Nueva Venecia, but we drove all through it.
Both towns are astounding! The ingenuity of the people! Understanding the history behind these communities gives you a deep appreciation for what they created.
We returned to the dock where we started - and beat the storm! and had a delicious large lunch of fresh fish, rice and plantains. Everything was delicious. It was an extraordinary excursion. I cannot express the beauty of the water and mountains, the colorful homes, and rich community that we got to see.
Juan then drove us to our hotel in Santa Marta which was so convenient for us.
I highly recommend this excursion. Well worth every penny and minute of your time Guanábana Tours were great to work with and very communicative. Everything was easy and straightforward.
