点评:Well, what an amazing 30 hours or so. Cam, my son had been to Ecuador in 2017 on a Camps International expedition and had wanted to return ever since - specifically to the Mojanda region. I’d tried to find ways of getting there but it looked tricky from Quito as it required a 4-WD for the last leg and there were no obvious options.
Then, almost by accident I came across Runa Tupari, a travel company formed by indigenous communities. They would customise a trip to our request. We booked to be collected from Quito, transported to Mojanda, have an English speaking guide for a walk around the lakes, then after lunch stay with a family in an indigenous community overnight before being driven back to Quito the next day.
Sure enough we were collected by Claudio at 7am and the driver (sorry - not sure of name but a right character) and driven to Mojanda. They had left home at 4.30 to be on time.
Once at Mojanda we left the vehicle and driver and began our hike. Claudio knows the area like the back of his hand, pointing out and naming the peaks and lakes we could see and also some of the flora. He was friendly and sociable too and aware we struggled slightly with any inclines due to the altitude. The scenery was stunning and it became evident and confirmed by Claudio we were indeed where Cam had been six years earlier - confirmed by the constant grin on his face.
After this amazing walk we met the truck again and went to Cotocachi for a fantastic lunch in a local restaurant chosen by Claudio. Being vegetarian was not an issue and sorted in advance. Then it was off to stay with the indigenous family chosen by Runa Tupari. This was a fantastic experience though I don’t feel we made the most of it due to our lack of Spanish. The family were very welcoming and we went to help harvest what I think were chocho beans. Great to be involved. Then back to the homestay to chill, watch the father train his youngest in football, play with the dog, and have an amazing (veggie) meal. Brilliant. There were lots of football memorabilia around the house - photos and trophies - and I as a football fan would loved to have chatted about it but my lack of Spanish prevented this happening. I did however find a photo on my phone of a team photo of a football team I played in in 1987 and they all loved that!! After an early night we had a great breakfast, shelled the beans we had harvested the previous day, and then were collected and driven the two hours back to Quito.
Cam and I cannot speak highly enough of the way this trip was organised, the way we were treated by Claudio and the driver (sorry again!), and the amazing family we stayed with who welcomed us in and gave us a brief insight into their lives.
If you are in Ecuador, and around the Quito area check out Runa Tupari for options available or to customise your trip - And do visit a homestay - you won’t be disappointed I’m sure.
