点评:When you think of the Bodleian, you think of a rarefied atmosphere of ancient manuscripts, rare books, historic reading rooms with vaulted ceilings (and probably Harry Potter).
The Weston Library could not be more different. It’s part of the Bodleian but this is the modern part, built in the mid-20th century to be a working library and research centre, and to house the Bodleian’s special collections.
Unlike the historic Bodleian, the Weston is free to enter and you can stroll in off the street.
There are two large exhibition spaces which always have something on. These can be fairly niche so it depends on your interests.
When I visited there was a brilliant exhibition, ‘Write, Cut, Rewrite”. It looked at the way authors edit and re-edit, ‘killing their darlings’ in order to hone their work. It featured scribbled notes, drafts, sketches, and discarded ideas - works in progress from great authors like Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Ian Fleming, Samuel Beckett, and John le Carré. It was only a small exhibition but I was fascinated and lingered here for some time.
The other exhibition was on Kafka. Both were free (although I believe that sometimes there's an entry fee).
The exhibitions are never permanent and change fairly regularly.
Even if you are on a very tight itinerary, it’s worth taking a few minutes to walk into Blackwell Hall. Overhead, a suspended glass gallery of bookshelves circles the foyer. It’s an impressive sight.
I browsed briefly in the gift shop which has a lot of lovely book-themed gifts. The Bodleian ‘Silence Please’ signs caught my eye, a fun gift for someone with a home library.
