A Great Place to Learn about Animal Welfare

点评：It's a shame that I paid attention to some of the negative reviews of Raystede as it meant that I delayed visiting for several years. We finally decided to visit the place and we were not disappointed. If you go there expecting a 'zoo' experience, that's not what you're going to get. Raystede is an animal welfare centre and it is clear that the welfare of the animals supersedes the entertainment of the visitors. What Raystede is is a lovely, well-kept animal sanctuary which is intent on educating people on the importance of animal welfare.
We attended on a Family Learning Day and were impressed by the wealth of staff and volunteers. They were keen to speak to visitors, showing children how best to approach dogs, how and what to feed chickens, and how to respect and care for nature. There is a lovely walk around the grounds where you can take dogs on a lead for walks. There is a well-equipped cafe serving an array of food and drinks, a pet goods store with a huge range of goodies, and a charity shop where you can pick up a bargain.
The animals that are up for adoption are not really visible which is fine, although we did see some beautiful rabbits. The terrapins are housed in two very lovely ponds and there are plenty of farm animals to see including goats, llamas, horses, donkeys and some adorable miniature donkeys. There are also plenty of domestic and wildfowl and it was sad to see the number of caged exotic birds that had been rescued. It's good to know that they are now being properly cared for.
If you are expecting a zoo experience, then Raystede is probably not for you. If, however, you love animals and/or have keen young animal lovers in the family and want to learn more about animal welfare, Raystede is a great day out. We'll definitely be revisiting.
