点评：Amberd deserves its sobriquet "Fortress in the Clouds" : build in the 10th-century, it sits 2,300m above sea level on the slopes of Mt Aragats where the Arkashen and Amberd rivers meet. Like most of these fortresses in the Caucasus, it's had a violent history : it got attacked, destroyed and changed hands often. The Mongols did a thorough job in 1236, so the current ruins you see are the result of their invasion - but some substantial re-construction was started mid 20th century.
Interesting detail : It is quite unusual to find a sophisticated bath house in this type building. Worth a better look because it is still in fairly good condition.
You can still sense the might of these enormous fortifications and see the strategic importance of its location. The views across the gorges and valleys are sensational.
