点评:A friend had recommended the Zaanse Schans area as an interesting trip from Amsterdam. It's an easy 20 minute direct train ride from Amsterdam Central - you can pay for the train with your credit card by tapping in at the barrier and out at the metal post (don't forget). A few minutes walk from the station and you cross the river to the nearby row of windmills. I bought the joint ticket for two windmills and the small museum at this windmill.
By luck it was a WINDY DAY when I went. I hadn't planned this but I would recommend picking a nice day when there's 10-30kmph of wind forecast to see the windmills in action.
I knew that wind (and river) power had been harnessed in the past for industrial use but it's difficult to fully appreciate this until you see it in action, it's very impressive particularly for woodwork hobbyists. There's a video that explains how this replica windmill was reconstructed in 2005 based on detailed plans of the original. The lowest floor has some more information and the sawdust collection area with resident cute mouse.
I had a pleasant chat with one of the volunteers. Somehow we ended the conversation on regional beers and he recommended trying the local Brouwerij ‘t IJ. See my other review, you can visit their microbrewery in Amsterdam.
On the path nearby there's a very good stall that sells a range of smoked/grilled fish in a bun, good value and very tasty.
