点评:Had my Strat regretted. It was a difficult job to get the last several gets out due to them being down to wood, so I decided to pay someone to do them. The guitar was there for 4½ months. While this is a long time I was more interested in the job being done correctly than fast: it was neither. I think it likely sat for most of the time it was there, and when I finally started to make a big deal of wanting it back, he just banged it out.
When I got it back he told me the nut didn't need to be replaced, which made no sense. It had been Plekd previously, and they had taken way too much fret off(which was why they were so low). None the less, when the machine does the fret leveling it also does the nut. So the nut that was on it when I brought it in was cut really really low to match the frets. When I tried it quickly there, it seemed okay. As soon as I changed the strings however, the Low E/A & D string were literally laying on the first string: it was unplayable. Beyond that there was fret buzz in a couple spots and the fret ends were not lined up.
I contacted him and told him the issue, which at the time wasn't a huge deal: a new nut and take a couple frets down a hair. I never heard back from him. After hearing nothing I just decided to take care of it myself. I shimmed the nut as a temp fix and left the frets, I played it once in a while but didn't want to play it too much. After a couple months the fret buzz in those spots got worse, and suddenly new spots started to buzz. Within a a few weeks it was utterly unplayable. The buzz turned into just dead spots where all vibration stopped.
I ended up doing a levelling myself (I've done countless levels over thirty years). It checked out with the straight edge and fret rocker: they were level. I crowned and polished them, then put on new strings.
Once I had it strung up, it started to buzz…AGAIN. And just like last time, the more time; the more buzzing. That's when I noticed the last fret wasn't seated properly and would have to be replaced. Sent him a message: heard nothing back. It sat in it's case for months.
A few months ago I was hired to build a couple amplifiers for a player. I spent some time with him after getting them dialed in and using his Strat, which made me want to use mine.
I decided to just do another leveling to get it playable. The same thing happened.
Now in the fullness of time and having Really taken a look at it, I knew the problem. He didn't do the refret how it is supposed to be done.
He just pulled them out, sanded the parts that were really torn up so it didn't look horrible, dropped the frets in and leveled them. He didn't sand down the entire board, and where he did you can plainly see is too flat, so he didn't use the correct radius.
The problem isn't that the last fret isn't seated properly, it's that none of them are. The reason why it wasn't bad when I first got it back was because it was still summer: the wood swells and the frets stay in place. It started to buzz badly in winter. Anyone who's owned guitars knows that when you have the heat running the wood shrinks a little. All those levellings I did were in the winter. They'd seem fine when I first checked it, but as soon as I start playing they start to sink deeper into the fretboard, and they get low spots.
So now here I am: facing having to pay for a refret to fix the refret I just paid for. I reached out to Sean and laid out what was going on, he knew the guitar right away…and that was the last I heard from him. I contacted him again and asked if he'd make it right, clearly he has no intention on doing so.
This wasn't a $200 import guitar, it's a $2300 American signature line, that's been unplayable after I shelled out $300 for a refret that left the guitar worse off than when it needed the original refret. So I'm faced with either having to do another refret, with each one having more wood being removed. My other choice is to replace the neck entirely. If I want to another Eric Johnson neck, they start around $700.
Everyone has a bad day, I'd be willing to chalk it up to that. I'm pretty sure instead of refinishing the fretboard, he just threw some wax on there, buffed it, because when I got it back it didn't look bad. As soon as I pulled the tape off that I put on to protect it when I did the first leveling, there were tons of tool marks and chipped wood that hadn't been visible. I suspect the nut was also filled in so that it seemed okay when I got it, but as soon as I replaced the strings it was clearly too low. There's no way he just missed that.
Take your instrument there at your own risk. I bought this guitar new in 2008, then sold in 2010 to buy the new model. Within a few months I knew that it was "The One," and I had made a mistake. I spent the next several years trying to buy it back. After a decade I finally got it back. And it's coming up on a a year and a half since it's been playable.
