点评：Our Inari hotel arranged the “Meet the Reindeer” tour in late winter. Bottom line up front: this was a wonderfully professional and enjoyable visit. On arrival around 0930 hrs our group was welcomed warmly by Janni, the owner, his wife Hanne, and herder Jukka. After discussing the Sami history and current presence in Lapland, Janni talked about his family’s multigenerational experience with reindeer husbandry, and how they live and breathe reindeer on the farm. He told us about a reindeer’s life (we had no idea that they spent half the year roaming unsupervised on the tundra) and that they liked to eat lichen, fresh grass, and willow,& birch shoots. Mushrooms are a particular treat. He noted that when winter is imminent almost all reindeer return to their place of birth, but a few turn up in unusual places and, when found by herders, are identified by family-specific ear notches and returned to the owner. While wintering at the farm they are fed commercially manufactured reindeer kibble, which they absolutely love, and at this point we were invited to give them breakfast. Our visit included coffee, tea, and cinnamon buns and a stop at the family craft shop, Kaksama Art Gallery, which was filled with a wide array of locally crafted items (including a line of coffee beans!). All told, we spent an amazingly informative and enjoyable two hours at the Inari Reindeer Farm. Janni, Hanne, and Jukka were attentive hosts, and we very much enjoyed being introduced to their world of reindeer husbandry.
