点评:Ok, i know this is a somewhat provocative title, but it's genuinely how i feel as a tourist. So in the essence of Ipoh brochure given to us by the friendly tourist information guy the mayor says 'based in a sustainable ecosystem', 'in a low carbon city' by 2030.
So you get off the train having booked a hotel in old town, 6 minutes walk. No buses stop at the railway station, only taxis and grabs and the many cars. There is no pedestrian crossing from the station so you have to cross four lanes of traffic. Where there is a further raised pedestrian crossing cars accelerate at you.
The heritage walk painted footsteps vanish so you have to have a map. The city smells of sewers and the pavements are almost unwalkable in places. Many of the shops are closed - probably due to Ramadan, the ones that are open aren't welcoming and the assustants mostly don't look up from their phones. The only positive thing about Ipoh is the street art. We spent two nights here and we really tried. Langkawi had the same feel of abandoned decay. The only vibrant place so far has been George town, Penang. The Heritage walk is free, so perhaps 1 star is unfair, but they do list the municipal car park as a heritage building, so....
If the people were more welcoming it might be different. But personally i wouldn't recommend Ipoh as a tourist destination.
