点评:I am deeply disappointed by our experience at Parrot Island and how my special needs grandson was treated.
My grandson is nonverbal, can swim, and wears a specialized flotation device for safety because he is prone to elopement. Before visiting, we reviewed Parrot Island’s policy, which states that flotation devices may be permitted if approved by a lifeguard.
However, we never got that opportunity.
We were stopped at the gate and told his flotation device was not allowed. No lifeguard was called to inspect it. No one evaluated whether it met their requirements. No one observed my grandson in the water. The decision was made immediately by gate staff without following the approval process outlined in their own policy.
I explained that this same flotation device has been approved and accepted at Disney and Universal water parks, where safety standards are extremely high. That information was dismissed.
When I requested a manager, I expected at least an attempt to find a solution or accommodate a child with special needs. Instead, I was told my grandson was a “liability.” The manager made no effort to involve a lifeguard, discuss alternatives, or work with us in any way. We were simply refunded and turned away.
The issue is not the refund. The issue is that a child with special needs was denied the opportunity to enjoy the park without anyone making even the smallest effort to evaluate his situation or follow the policy advertised to families.
Families of children with disabilities already face enough barriers. What made this experience so upsetting was not just being denied entry, but the complete lack of compassion, understanding, and willingness to accommodate. We left feeling embarrassed, excluded, and unwelcome.
I hope Parrot Island reviews both its policies and staff training so that other special needs families are treated with more respect and dignity than we experienced.
