点评:This County campground is a dream, and right beside the scenic Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge – with postcard views of cloud-draped mountains, log-strewn beaches, windswept trees, and bald eagles soaring at sunset above the glistening waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Most of the forested camp sites are nicely separated by dense shrubbery, showy ferns, & tall Beach Pines – which offer privacy for tent/RV camping, and secluded dining at the weathered wooden picnic tables. In June when we were there (no mosquitoes yet), we enjoyed our outside breakfast with chickadees and kinglets cheerily chatting around us (blending with laughter of nearby children).
Then magically, as the sun warmed the air, large swallowtail butterflies appeared – bright flashes of yellow tinged with black tiger stripes – sailing in the sunlight past our table, and fluttering high into the tree tops. Wild roses in bloom spangled the green perimeter of the camp with a delicate pink blush; and a sweet woodsy aroma filled the air!
Clean restrooms with adjacent showers (25 cents for 2 minutes) are conveniently close, along with a playground for kids. Enticing, easy-strolling, footpaths lead from the camping area to sensational seascape overlooks, and to the Refuge entryway (a $3 day-use fee area for up to 4 people; or presentation of various passes – such as the Refuge Annual Pass, Senior or Golden Age Pass, Every Kid in a Park Pass, & Military Pass). Along the way, you may pass campground hosts & others walking their dogs, and exchange greetings with friendly passersby.
It’s best to make advance campground reservations during the summer months. Once you know your dates of travel, you can check online for availability of sites, then select one, & make payment to assure you’ll have a site!
Depending on whether you are driving from Port Angeles or Sequim, you can get groceries there before going to the campground.
