Rothesay's Victorian Toilets的点评
点评：In an age when it’s sometimes difficult to find “public conveniences” Rothesay have bucked the trend by restoring the gentlemen’s toilets next to the ferry landing. The work was completed in 1994 by a Trust at the cost of some £300000.
Needless to say I couldn’t resist a look and was surprised at the time of my visit that there was no fee for a pee when often a small charge is applied for the few remaining facilities that are offered anywhere.
They have made a grand job of the restoration work and it was only upon checking that nobody else was on site, and with a little hesitation, that I reached for my camera to capture the Victorian splendour! Needless to say someone walked in on the process and I had to explain that I didn’t generally take photos in public toilets but had made an exception in this case. Fortunately the guy was understanding and planned to do the same!
My wife, who had gone to the ladies next door, wasn’t sure what the fuss was about as it seems their facilities were just bog standard. I later discovered that although the original public toilets were created in 1900 to cater for the many day-trippers arriving by ferry, these were restricted to gents only. (It probably catered for the clientele who made use of the bar and generous licensing hours onboard the steamers). The ladies toilets were only created in 1994 by reconfiguring office and storage space in the building hence the reason they lack the Victorian splendour.
Probably much to his amusement, King Charles has a plaque with his Duke of Rothesay coat of arms above a urinal he made use of when visiting the facilities some years ago. I’m not sure if this is styled as “By Royal Appointment” or as a “Royal Flush”. It’s certainly more significant than the other markings which are historically associated with public conveniences.
