History and art - if you visit only one museum in Kokkola - visit this one
Roos House - K.H.Renlund museum的点评
点评:This was the first museum we visited in Kokkola. We were on a road trip and we had planned Kokkola to be our pit stop for 3–5 hours. We visited Roos House, Pedagogio, Lassander House, walked around Neristan, saw the old English gunboat and had a tasty waffle lunch.
The Roos house is one of the oldest stone houses in Kokkala and it was completed 1813. Roos family - merchants - built it to be their private house. The two-story house is a mix of different architecture styles at least Rococo and Neoclassical features. This house has seen a lot. It has been private home for Roos family, Tsar Alexander I has visited it. Later the Kokkola's first upper elementary school started here in 1860s. The house has been also a bank before it was bought by city of Kokkola in 1960s.
The Roos house is a perfect place see how wealthy bourgeoisie lived in Finland. There is also a small but quite nice art collection in the 2nd floor mainly paintings from the Golden Age of Finnish Art e.g. from Pekka Halonen and Magnus Enckell. The paintings are a donation from Karl Herman Renlund who was born in Kokkola. He was a sailor's son who worked his way from shop assistant to wealty business man. There is also a small exhibition about him and his personal history.
You can visit this museum by yourself without guidance. Which in our case was perfect.
It is so good that cities buy this kind of buildings and renovate them to be museums. It is the only way to preserve our history and cultural heritage.
