点评:On Friday I had a lovely fun trip from Brightlingsea Harbour to St. Osyth and back, stopping at the St Osyth boatyard to have 'afternoon tea' on the 19th century Thames Sailing Barge ‘May’.
The boat (which holds a maximum of ten people??) travelled at a nice relaxed pace which allowed us to enjoy the scenic view at a leisurely pace while still making good progress. Plenty of wildlife and nature to see, as well as yachts and other craft. The trip gives a great view of B’sea creek, St Osyth creek and the surrounding area from an angle that even most locals will not have seen before. Colin, who manned the boat, gave interesting details of the area, including local history, whilst also carefully guiding the boat.
The Sailing Barge ‘May’ was built in 1891 and has an interesting history. It is currently in the early stages of being restored. It has recently been featured in various media. Robbie who served the food was very friendly and gave plenty of interesting details about the barge’s history and the work that the trust members are doing to restore the barge to its former glory.
The sandwiches, cakes and scones were very nice and well presented. Served with Tea/coffee. Very enjoyable.
I definitely recommend this trip. Tourists, locals, nature lovers and history buffs will all get something from it, in my view. I’ll likely do it again next year (as well as at least one of the other boat trips available).
For anyone booking it, be aware that the trip might need to be cancelled or re-scheduled due to bad weather. Wear a coat as you may well get splashed by the sea if the weather is not that calm. It’s all part of fun of being afloat. You will need to be mobile enough to get on and off the boat, but almost everyone will have no trouble at all. The barge has steep narrow stairs(photo on harbour website), but most people will be fine, but likely not suitable for some people. There is a toilet on the barge.
