Point Lonsdale Lighthouse的点评
点评：Point Lonsdale received a private signal station in 1851 consisting of a pole mounted oil lamp on top of a sand dune to help ships negotiate its dangerous waters. The first lighthouse was a wooden structure relocated from Shortlands Bluff in 1863 which remained in use until replaced by the present tower. It was finally dismantled in 1912.
The current lighthouse, a 22 metre concrete tower was built in 1902. In 1934 the light converted from kerosene to electric illumination. The Rip, as it is known, is one of the most notorious entrances to any bay in the world...so the necessity for this beacon is unquestionable.
There is a small carpark area at the base and you walk up a small incline to get to the lighthouse... there is a lookout area next to and behind if you will also get magnificent views of the coastline.
These views are absolutely stunning... so there are a few reasons to visit. The historical aspect of the site is brilliant because also nearby is the WW1 and WW2 Searchlight Emplacement. A path runs past the light house over the dunes and the views along it are breath-taking. There are information boards dotted along the path.
I could see people walking along the beach below, delighting in the freedom it offers... these beaches are not full of people but have rock pools and shapes carved into the cliffs.
The experience of visiting is encompassing... you will hear the hooded plovers hiding under the bushes, you can look up to see birds flying overhead, the sounds of the waves shuffling to the shore, the breeze rustling the bushes, the smell of the sea air, the sun on your skin...
