点评:I don’t often give bad reviews, but wasn’t impressed by this museum at all. Objects poorly displayed with no organisation, context, apparent purpose or explanation. Large empty spaces and woke hand ringing about how bad the British Empire was at every opportunity. I thought this was supposed to celebrate British innovation and tell the story of “making” in Derby.
There is virtually nothing about the listed building, silk making or why it’s an important world heritage site.
The ground floor is largely emptied out as a presumably more lucrative function space. What exhibits there are seem to be pretty much in use as wall paper to create “ambiance”.
The first floor has the majority of the displays, but seems disorganised and again such exhibits as there are have been poorly displayed.
The second floor is a jumble of stuff on pallets. They are completely unlabelled and organised, like a 10 year old would, by colour and material. How this is supposed to stimulate the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs I can’t say. Some of these exhibits were war dead rolls of honour from factories and the like. Seems somewhat inappropriate having these stacked on pallets with miscellaneous workshop ephemera.
The best part of the museum is the excellent model railway. This was the only element to save it from being a one star.
The top floor has been largely flogged off as rented work space, apart from a temporary exhibition space that was not open and a shop selling locally made nick-nacks. Oh and not to forget the “viewing area” which you can only reach by going back down and up again. I really suggest this isn’t worth the effort as the only view was of a dystopian wasteland being graffitied in broad daylight by two youths.
All in all I think this is a lost opportunity. At least it’s free, but I’d be happy to pay an entrance charge for a proper industrial museum.
