点评：During my journey down from the capital Dublin to County Wicklow to explore and review the Black Castle, I felt myself drawn into a landscape heavy with legend and sorrow. The Wicklow Mountains rose around me like silent guardians, watching over the ruins that awaited me by the sea.
Black Castle, clinging to a rugged cliff above the Irish Sea, is a crumbling echo of Norman ambition. Its fractured walls seem to murmur tales of long-past sieges, betrayals, and spectral lore. Constructed in the 1100s by the influential Fitzgerald family, it once stood as a defensive outpost against native Irish clans and other would be conquerors.
As I neared the site, the sea breeze carried not only the tang of salt but a strange hush, as though the past refused to let go. The castle’s elevated position provides stunning vistas, but also serves as a grim reminder of the violence and conflict that once unfolded there.
Excavations have revealed traces of life from the medieval period, arrowheads, shards of pottery, but much of the fortress’s tale remains elusive. Was its downfall the result of betrayal? Or did it simply succumb to time and neglect?
