点评:This mansion from 1858 has been successfully restored to show the lavish lifestyle of a very wealthy owner. The first floor has 6 lovely spacious rooms, decorated for dining and entertaining - 3 on each side of a long hallway. Visitors won't be disappointed with these 6 rooms. Tours are guided. We used 30 minutes for this visit - rather short and expensive visit ($20 with no seniors discount), but consider the amount as a donation for further renovation costs.
One feature of the rooms on the first floor were that on one side they were all connected by wide doorways that could be slid shut or kept open for larger gatherings. It was interesting to hear the guides describe those gatherings and entertainments. The long dining room table was not set so one could appreciate its lovely patina. There was 1 bedroom on this floor lavishly, but tastefully, decorated with lovely bedding on the 4 poster bed and windows dripping in matching fabric. Expect to see marble fronted fireplaces and marble topped games tables and Victorian chairs for seating on the first floor. Look at the plaster work representing magnolia flowers and leaves which surround the lighting fixtures on the first floor. In December, there was a minimum of tasteful Christmas decor in each room. The renovations the Garden Club has overseen are remarkable changing the house from its past use as a boarding house and school to present appearance.
The stairs (no elevator) to the second level are in the hallway right at the front door. The 6 rooms up here were divided between austerly decorated bedrooms and rooms with collections. One collection was of garments worn by past Kings and Queens at the town's Royalty Ball held in April. The gowns were extravagent - ivory satin wedding type gowns, many with long trains - simply lovely! The other collection was of dolls displayed in a cabinet.
There is a small gift shop on the main floor. We didn't proceed to look at the landscaping. Take a close look at the exterior walls of this mansion - fake brickwork supposed to imitate brownstone homes of the wealthy in New York City. An enjoyable visit overall.
