点评:We were staying in Eskdale Green so the dog and I decided to go and take a look at the Japanese Garden in Giggle Alley Wood on our evening walk. You get to it up a driveway next to the public loos and take a left through a gap in the wall and climb a flight of steps (not very good ones being uneven and irregular) and then climb a path that rises through the wood. You eventually get to another flight of dodgy steps on the right and have to push through some foliage that's grown over the path and you're there. All of that's no problem to those who are young and fit but I'm a 74 year old crumbly with a leg brace and a dodgy knee who walks with a stick so, for me, it was a little bit of an adventure.
Once you're in the garden it's all rather lovely and well worth the climb as you can see from the pictures. The dog loved it as there was lots to explore. He could manage the bridges without a problem but I just used the least curved one as the others were quite steep and very slippery with the odd missing plank.
It's a great pity that this place hasn't had a bit of money spent on it as per Southern Green's Japanese Garden - Feasibility Study which also contains its full history and some old photos showing what it looked like in its prime. Trip Advisor doesn't seem to want me to paste a link so if you're interested you'll have to Google it.
As it is if you're crocked you might find it a bit dodgy of access although I found getting down easier than climbing up. There's a circular walk you can do but I didn't try that - too late in the day and in any case I couldn't see where the path continued out of the garden.
