点评：Situated in the extensive and attractive grounds of Bethlem Royal Hospital on the outskirts of Bexley, this Museum and Gallery is a thought-provoking rather than entertaining experience. The contrast is well illustrated between the Victorian era incarceration in Mental Hospitals and what exists today and is very stark. It left us uneasy about whether some things are better for those afflicted today than when they were treated as a spectacle to be visited by the public for entertainment. There is certainly nothing hidden about harsh treatment in the past, but there are some disturbing references to the limits of help available in the present day beyond the devoted work being done at Bethlem and elsewhere.
We have a particular interest in the artist Louis Wain, a former patient at Bethlem, and were disappointed to find very little of his work there, because it was on loan elsewhere (in the Cartoon Museum in Holborn).
The quaint and appealing Hospital chapel in the grounds nearby is also well worth a visit
On balance we are glad that we visited Bethlem and would recommend others to follow in our footsteps to learn about a life that the majority of us do not know or think much about. Not the easiest place to reach from the other side of the river when there are problems with Thames Crossings, as there were on our visit, so allow for possible delays in transportation.
