Unexpectedly Ornate Inside

点评：St Lorenzo’s church is a lot more ornate inside than you’d think.
Built between 1790 and 1800 and remodelled in 1925, the facade is rather plain and apart from its unusual circular shape, you could easily walk past without paying it the attention it deserves.
Inside, is unexpected.
Most striking is the beautiful white dome, painted in blue, red and gold with a detailed geometric pattern.
A series of frescoes, painted by Ciro Pavisa, depict 5 pivotal scenes from the life of the ancient Roman martyr, San Lorenzo (St Lawrence). Starting from the left, the scenes show the Healing of the Sick, the Treasures of the Church, the Torture on the Grill, the Arrest of Sixtus II and the Exercise of the Ministry.
The most gruesome scene shows St Lawrence after his arrest. He was tortured by being tied across an iron grill and slowly roasted over an open fire. Lawrence, (clearly was a man who could dig deep when needed), famously told his torturers that he wasn’t quite done on one side and they should turn him over.
ENTRANCE:
Entry is free.
The church was damaged is the 2016 earthquakes and was closed for some time . It’s now open but due to ongoing repairs, the entrance is around the right hand side of the church and up the ramp.
