点评:Urbisaglia is off the beaten track for most tourists but for those who have the time to explore the more remote countryside, this is a very beautiful part of rural Italy.
St Lorenzo’s church is one of a handful of historic sights in the small town.
Although the facade is unremarkable, the interior is unexpectedly ornate. Inside, a large 8-sided dome soars overhead and is painted in gold and white patterning and is supported by towering fluted columns.
The artwork around the walls of the church depict scenes from the life of San Lorenzo (St Lawrence). One shows the scene where, following the execution of Pope Sixtus II in 258AD, St Lawrence was also arrested and brought before a magistrate. He was ordered to hand over “the treasures of the Church.” Not one to go down without a fight, St Lawrence distributed as much of the Church’s wealth as he could among the poor, then quickly went about gathering a large group of people - all of them either poor, or disabled, dying or sick, orphaned, or elderly. When he next appeared in before the magistrate, instead of bringing gold or jewels, he brought this group with him, saying “These people are the real treasures of the Church.” Not surprisingly, the magistrate was not best pleased. In fact he was pretty annoyed and worse, he was vindictive. He condemned St Lawrence to a slow and gruesome death. Another scene shows the saint tied to a grill over a flame until he died.
We have visited the church before and have always found it open (although I believe that, like many Italian churches, it is closed for a few hours in the middle of the day.
Entry is free.
