点评:After our seaside lunch break it was off to explore some more of Capri. Having seen more or less all of the port area and wanting to get away from the heat and the crowds it seemed like a good idea to take the funicular up to take in the views from up top. Besides we all had tickets as part of our tour and the entrance was almost directly beside the place, we’d had lunch at.
The Funicolare di Capri was first opened in 1907 and connects the Marina Grande or main harbour of the town of Capri with the hilltop Piazza Umberto in the centre of the island. Since opening it has undergone several updates and renovations the first being in 1958 and the most recent being in 2018.
The funicular runs on a track 670 metres (2,200 feet) long and rising 139 metres (446 feet) to the top. Included in this is a tunnel about 68 metres (223 feet) at the lower end. The trip includes takes about 5 minutes each way and runs every 15 minutes or so in high tourist season. The cost is 1.80 Euros each way and tickets can be purchased at each end.
Despite being a popular tourist attraction, it is run as part of and like any other public transit system. That is to say rapidly and efficiently. After passing through the turnstiles, one moves quickly into one of the two cars until they are filled.
There is no waiting on the platform to be the last on and guarantee a window spot for viewing. Once full the funicular moves up or down to the other station and the passengers quickly detrain and the process starts again. If one is intent on taking pictures or just enjoying the view, careful placement in the line must be considered especially if its crowded.
The upper station leads into Piazzetta di Capri wit its numerous cafes, bars and restaurants as well as a large open observation platform from which can see the entire town and port area. Anyone looking for relief from the crowded port area will be a bit disappointed though. If the weather is nice as it was on our visit, this area is just as crowded. Apparently we weren't the only ones with the great idea to ride the funicluar.
After some picture taking and perhaps a refreshment it is sadly time to take the funicular back down the hill side and into the crowds on the harbourfront.
